On October 10, 1845, the US Naval Academy officially opened in Annapolis, Maryland with 50 student and 7 professors. Until 1850, the school was known as the Naval School. The original curriculum included mathematics, navigation, gunnery, chemistry, English and French. In 1850, the students were required to study for four years and study aboard ships each summer in between.
